I have two jobs at once. How do they count for 88 days?

Short answer

Hours from two specified-work jobs in the same week add up, so two part-time jobs can make a full week. But one calendar day never counts as more than one day, even across two employers. Both jobs must be in listed postcodes doing listed work for your visa.

Lots of Working Holiday makers stack jobs: picking in the morning, a pub shift at night, or two farms with short weeks. Here’s how that counts.

The official limit: one day is one day

“You cannot count work carried out on one calendar day as more than one day of specified work. For example, if the industry’s standard day is 5 hours long, working 10 hours on one day – in a single or separate shifts for one or more employers – does not count as 2 days of specified work.”

Home Affairs, specified subclass 417 work

So two jobs on the same day are still one day. And a month can never count more days than it has, however many hours you work.

But hours across a week add up

The aim is to do as much work as a full-timer would over the period. If neither job alone is full-time, together they can be. Counted from payslips at 38 hours = 7 days:

Job A Job B Week total Counts as
20 h 18 h 38 h 7 days
15 h 10 h 25 h about 4.6 days
30 h 20 h 50 h 7 days, and the extra 12 hours can fill a short week in the same month

Both jobs must count on their own

Each job has to be specified work in its own right:

  • in a listed postcode,
  • doing work that’s listed for that postcode,
  • on your visa (417 or 462),
  • paid at the legal rate.

A second job that isn’t specified work adds nothing, however many hours you do.

Keep the evidence separate

Keep each employer’s payslips, bank deposits and a letter naming the work site. Overlapping dates are normal with two jobs, as long as both sets of payslips are real.

Count two jobs

In the 88-day calculator, add each employer as its own job with its own postcode and payslips. It combines the hours and makes sure no calendar day counts twice.

Questions people also ask

If I work 6 hours at one job and 6 at another on the same day, is that 2 days?

No. Home Affairs says working 10 hours on one day, in a single or separate shifts for one or more employers, doesn't count as 2 days.

Can two part-time jobs add up to a full week?

Yes, in hours. Two 19-hour jobs in the same week give 38 hours, which is a normal full week and covers all 7 days.

Does the second job need to be specified work too?

Yes. Only hours from specified work count. A city café job alongside a farm job adds nothing unless the café is in a postcode listed for hospitality.
